Free Australian citizenship test practice: what is free and what is not

Last updated 22 October 2026

Everything on the test is in the free booklet, Our Common Bond. We help you practise reading the questions the way the test asks them. This guide is a plain list of what you can use without paying, and where paying may help.

What is free

The booklet. Our Common Bond holds all the facts. The Department of Home Affairs says you do not need other packages to pass. It is available in English and 40 community languages.

The Home Affairs practice test. It is free on its own site. It has 20 multiple choice questions and a 45 minute limit, with the same pass rule as the real test. It is a sample only. The questions on the day will be different.

Other Home Affairs material. The Department also offers a podcast. It helps if you learn by listening.

Our free mock. Twenty questions, five on values, timed, with reasons. It shows both scoring rules. It is a sample of our practice, and it is free.

What the free tools do not do

The booklet teaches. It does not test. You can read a page and feel sure, and then miss a question that is worded in an odd way.

The Home Affairs practice test tests you. It gives you a score. One sample test can only show so much. If you pass it the first time, you may be ready. If you do not, you will want more questions on the topics you missed.

When paid practice can help

Paid practice is a choice. It may help if:

  • you want many question sets, so you do not see the same questions twice
  • you want a written reason for each answer
  • you want to see which topics you miss most
  • you have a few weeks and want to practise a little every day
  • you read English more slowly than you would like and want repetition with the exact phrases

It may not help if you have time to read the booklet twice and one free mock shows no gaps.

The Department does not endorse paid packages. We say so on our own pages, and we want you to know it before you pay anyone.

What to look for in any paid practice

  • One payment. Many apps charge every week or every month. Read the plan before you tap pay, and find out how to cancel.
  • A date on the questions. Look for the date they were last checked against the booklet. Old sets teach old facts.
  • Both rules. The set should show your overall score and your values score apart. If it shows one number, it hides the rule that fails most people.
  • No tricks. Questions should be as clear as the booklet. A set that is harder than the test teaches you nothing.
  • Honest claims. Be careful with pass rates and countdown timers. If a site makes an offer for when you fail, check what you must do to claim it and what you get.

Our offer, plainly

The mock is free. The full practice is one payment of A$8.99 for 30 days or A$11.99 for 90 days, with no weekly charge and no renewal. It adds more questions, a reason for every answer, and a record of your weak topics. There are no ads.

You can stop after the free mock. Many people will.
