Citizenship ceremonies in Newcastle

This page is for people becoming Australian citizens in the City of Newcastle area. Ceremonies are held at Newcastle City Hall, usually four times a year. The city has no say in who is invited.

How you are invited

Home Affairs contacts new citizens when ceremony details are known, and the invitation arrives roughly a month ahead. A single private ceremony may be possible when you meet the rules. You ask for it with a form from Home Affairs.

When ceremonies are held

The city holds four ceremonies a year at Newcastle City Hall, and its FAQ also says there are a number of ceremonies through the year.

Guests and what to wear

Family and friends may come. Your email invitation from Home Affairs explains how to book tickets for them.

Ceremonies include a cultural performance and the pledge. Applicants aged 16 and over must come. Any child under 16 on your application becomes a citizen along with the parent, and need not attend.

What happens at the ceremony

You make the Australian Citizenship Pledge in front of the people at the ceremony. You become an Australian citizen when you make the pledge, not before. After the pledge you should receive your citizenship certificate. If it is not ready on the day, it comes by post.
