Citizenship ceremonies in Darebin

This page is for people becoming Australian citizens in the City of Darebin area. The council lists four dates from 3 October to 17 December 2026. A Welcome to Country opens each ceremony.

How you are invited

After approval, Home Affairs posts you a letter that gives the date and place. The council has no part in approvals, waitlists or places. This is usually within 6 months of approval.

When ceremonies are held

Ceremonies run on several dates, and the January ceremony is on a day close to 26 January, three days before or after.

Coming ceremony dates

  • Thursday 5 November 2026
  • Thursday 3 December 2026
  • Thursday 17 December 2026

Dates can change. Your invitation gives your own date and time.

What to bring

  • your invitation letter from Home Affairs
  • photo ID, such as a passport or driver licence
  • if you have none, at least 3 different papers with your name, address and signature, all translated into English
  • a holy book, if you want to hold one when you pledge

Guests and what to wear

Each candidate can bring 1 guest. Children and dependants can come too, and they do not count as guests.

Smart casual clothes. Clothes that celebrate your culture are welcome.

Each new citizen gets a plant native to the area. Registration opens 45 to 60 minutes before, and the ceremony takes 30 to 70 minutes. Wait at least 10 days before you apply for a passport.

What happens at the ceremony

You make the Australian Citizenship Pledge in front of the people at the ceremony. You become an Australian citizen when you make the pledge, not before. After the pledge you should receive your citizenship certificate. If it is not ready on the day, it comes by post.
